Wow! What a Cast!

June 3, 2008

Well, our auditions are over and I can honestly say I am thrilled at the amazing cast we have put together. 3 beautiful and wildly talented women: Maureen Clark, a recent Pennsylvania musical theatre student, Colleen Zettler, a transplanted New Yorker recently relocated back to Cleveland with opera talent and Liz Baumgartner, an amazing dancer with a beautiful soprano voice as well as a surprising belt. Add to the mix my friend and an incredible performer Bob Stoesser who will be releasing his debut solo CD in July called "A Place Called Grace" (www.bobstoesser.com). We are still looking for one more man and I have a couple good contacts on that front, but so far I'm really excited to be working with these people that I think will really be able to breathe new life into these songs and give the show a youthful energy that I'm looking for.

Auditions are a funny thing....I always have a clear vision of what I'm looking for (or at least I think I do, until someone surprises me), but I've never really been comfortable "judging" someone. Having been on the other side of the table so many times, I know the guts it takes to stand there and sort of let it all hang out and risk rejection. Kind of like the kid at the high school dance that has spent the whole evening mustering up the courage to ask that special girl for a dance. As one who has filled the real-life role of the awkward dork, it's always been my belief that the girl (or guy) being asked should always say yes to a dance - even if she'd rather eat bugs - if, for no other reason than to acknowledge the guts it took to make that long walk across the room and actally pop the question. Is one dance going to kill you? And it could really Dorky Dorkerman feel great for 3 minutes. Unfortunately in my own experience, many girls didn't share that same belief!

But obviously when casting a show, you can't cast everyone just because they asked you to dance - even if you would like to....and with the talent that showed up to our auditions, I definitely would have like to cast a few others as well...incredible talent! But with a cast of only 5, you have to be very selective and I really believe we have the best mix of awesome talent and I can't wait to start working with these people.

And to all of them I would ask...wanna dance?
